DEVELOPMENT OF VACANT LOTS INTO RAIN GARDENS

Sharon Adams, Executive Director of Walnut Way Conservation Corps, is being recognized for her efforts to help residents of one of Milwaukee’s oldest and most significant African-American neighborhoods create a network of rain gardens. The rain gardens provide aesthetic enjoyment and water quality improvement by disconnecting downspouts from the combined sewer system. She helped forge partnerships with the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District, the City of Milwaukee, and the campuses of UW-Milwaukee and UW-Madison, to help community members develop community gardens and obtain long-term control over vacant lots to serve as community assets.
